Calculate the z-score

The average height for all males is 69.3 inches with a standard deviation of 2.8 inches. For females, the average height is 64 inches and the standard deviation is 2.8. These are population values. For this week’s discussion, you will calculate a z-score based on your own height and determine whether your score is within the 95% normal range or if it is out of that range and considered unusual.

Measure your height as precisely as possible to a tenth of an inch. For example, 5’2 ¼” would be 62.3 inches tall.

Calculate the z-score based on population values for males or females. Use the formula: z= (x-µ)/σ where x is your height in inches.

Calculate the normal range by creating the interval that is within 2 standard deviations of the population mean. Multiply the population standard deviation by 2 and then add/subtract from the population mean.

In your discussion post, include the following based on your calculations.

Is your height within the normal range? Is this what you expected?

Would your height be considered unusual? Why or why not.

Have you encountered any challenges based on your height? For example, someone who is shorter or taller may have a difficult time finding pants that are an appropriate length.

How is the concept of normality used in your field? For example, a patient’s blood pressure is compared to a normal range of values, and a financial planner may check the “average” return of a stock.

How does knowing what is usual help people and corporations, and government organizations plan? For example, how do airplane manufacturers use the normal height to design aircraft seating?

Towards this end, you will be creating a Two- Year Plan wherein you will construct a roadmap of the next couple years of your life

In this class, one of the major sub-themes we’ve been exploring is personal development. We’ve been constantly thinking about how we can apply course concepts not just to our careers, but also to our lives, as well. Given that most of us are currently upperclassmen, our future is one aspect of our lives that is probably very salient at the moment. Planning for the future is a scary endeavor for many of us, and often, as a result, we put it aside until “later.” In this assignment however, we will be addressing this problem head-on, by working through a plan of attack that will help us to productively think about our road ahead. Towards this end, you will be creating a Two- Year Plan wherein you will construct a roadmap of the next couple years of your life. To do so, please complete:

STEPS

2026: Two-Year Goals

Take some time to consider where you hope to be in two years. Feel free to think through all areas of your life: career, school, relationships, family, religion, hobbies, etc. After doing so, please:

1. List 2-3 long-term goals for yourself. 2. Explain the motivation behind each of these goals (~1 paragraph for each goal).

Try to find the “sweet spot” for your goals. Push yourself a bit – your goals should require some effort, and should not be easy to accomplish (e.g., “I aspire to be a manager at my company”). However, also be realistic (most of us will probably not be CEOs or marry Jessica Alba in two years, sadly).

2025: One-Year Goals

Now that you have your long-term goals in mind, think about where you will need to be in a year in order to be on track to fulfill your Two-Year Plan. Based on the 2026 goals you just set for yourself, please:

1. List an intermediate goal for each long-term goal you listed in 2026. 2. Explain how each intermediate goal will move you towards your long-term goals

in 2026.

For example, if your long-term goal is to be a manager at your company by 2026, an intermediate goal for 2025 is to be promoted to supervisor.

2024: Six-Month Goals

Now that you have your intermediate goals for 2025, work through what your short- term goals for the rest of 2024 would need to be in order to reach these goals. Keeping in mind the 2025 goals you set for yourself, please:

1. List a short-term goal for each intermediate goal you listed in 2025.

2. Explainhoweachshort-termgoalwillmoveyoutowardsyourintermediategoals

in 2025.

For example, if your intermediate goal is to be a supervisor at your company by 2025, then your short-term goal is to land a position at your company by the end of 2024.

2024: Current Plans

Now that you have your short-term goals for the rest of 2024, consider what you should be doing right now in order to achieve them. Thinking about the 2024 goals you just set for yourself, please:

1. Listanactivityyoushouldbedoingnowtoreacheachshort-termgoalbytheend of 2024.

2. Explain how each activity will move you towards your short-term goals in 2024.

For example, if your short-term goal is to land a position at your company by 2024, then you need to be applying for an internship with your company right now.

PURPOSE

Often, it is scary to consider the future because everything seems so lofty and out-of- reach. The purpose of this assignment is thus to help you start thinking about your long-term future by dividing up these big goals into smaller, more manageable increments. From here, you should walk away with a better idea of the concrete plans needed to make those dreams a reality. I’d encourage you to revisit this Two-Year Plan every few months, to ensure you are staying on track to reach your goals. And as the years go on, feel free to update your Plan with new long-term, intermediate, and short- term goals. As you get in the practice of thinking about your future in this way, it will hopefully become a habit, leading to a successful lifestyle!

The Question: What does the document reveal about life at the time it was written? Aim for two or three observations and use specific evidence from the document. The idea behind this assignment is to take a primary source document and put it in its historical context using the course materials. You’re showing that you can organize all the information and apply what you’ve learned. SUCCESS Center: Don’t forget the resources available at IHCC’s SUCCESS Center. They have a computer lab and tutoring services are also available. See http://www.indianhills.edu/success/index.html for details. Online tutoring is available through the NetTutor link on our course home page. Specifics: Your paper should be 600-800 words typed and double-spaced with one-inch margins in 12-point Times font. These are not research papers; use only the course materials to complete the assignment. I provide general guidelines for writing papers on MyHills. I will use these guidelines when grading your papers. Make sure you have read and understood both of these handouts before you begin writing. If you have any questions, it is your responsibility to contact me. Submitting Papers: Unless you have made a previous arrangement with me in writing (by email) at least one day before the due date, I will consider papers late after 11:59 PM on Thursday, April 18. Your paper must be submitted electronically via the Turnitin dropbox on MyHills. You are responsible for ensuring your paper is submitted properly. Always double check electronic submissions. You should be checking your originality report, anyway, so you’ll know if it’s been submitted properly. Ignorance of proper submission procedures is not a valid excuse for a late paper. I provide Turnitin instructions on MyHills. Using the PSA Worksheet to outline your paper: Questions 1-7 are roughly the kind of information you’d put in the intro paragraph. Questions 8 – 10 can form the root of each of your body paragraphs. Questions 11 and 12 are things to consider for the conclusion paragraph. Submit your PSA 1 worksheet on one of the primary sources listed, then use it to write your paper. See MyHills for a blank PSA worksheet. Citations Remember, you must use your course materials. These are not research papers. Cite any page numbers from the textbook. Cite course notes by topic or date. You should not use any internet tools, including generative AI or AI-editing software. If you need editing help, come to me, the Success Center Writing Tutors, or NetTutor on our course menu.

Discuss the relative strengths and weakness of two of the career theory models that we discussed this semester

For this final paper assignment, you will discuss the relative strengths and weakness of two of the career theory models that we discussed this semester, you will then also use them to analyze the career identity profile of an interviewee of your choosing.

First, select two of the theories that we discussed in class (Super’s Developmental Lifespan-Lifespace Model, Social Cognitive Career Theory, Gottfredson’s Circumscription and Compromise Theory, Holland’s Hexagonal Trait Model). Compare and contrast their relative strengths and weaknesses in explaining career choice and identity development. For this discussion make sure to include the following:

· What factor most impacts a person’s career development according to each theory?

· How does parenting and early exposure impact later interest development?

· Does the theory account for cultural differences and how?

· What is the relative weakness in each theory? What does it not account for?

· In light of the theory’s perspective, how would counseling be most effective in supporting someone’s growth?

Second, you will find a volunteer for your interview. Ask them about their early childhood interests and career aspirations and take notes. Next, ask them to take the True Talent profile and questionnaire as you did (you can use the same free website links). After reading their profile, write about their reactions and reflections in relation to taking the questionnaire.

· Did they agree, disagree?

· Did they draw connections to their past experiences?

· Were they surprised by the career matches?

· What were their thoughts about what they learned from their profile?

Lastly, review their results (e.g., personality type, strengths and areas for growth, and some of the compatible careers.). Based on your analysis, which career theory seems to best explain your volunteer’s career journey so far?

This paper should be approx. 4-7 pages in length (Not including references or cover page), APA style, 12 point font. It will be due on MAY 15th, 2024. LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. Good luck.
